KAREN DEUCHAR

Box with Aquatic Life

This was a plain, glazed, oval box to which Karen, using sculpture paste, added several shells and the starfish.  Then, using regular china paint, Karen painted the Beta (Siamese Fighting Fish), other fish and the aquatic plants.  Karen painted the base of the box the same color as the sand area, using a "stippling" action.  After the painting was completed and fired, Karen embellished the sand area, using "Moon Flakes".  The Moon Flakes are tiny glass crystals.  To add them to glazed porcelain, you coat the area with medium and then sprinkle the flakes on top of the medium.  To remove the flakes from unwanted areas, you gently shake and tap the porcelain piece to shake them off.  After the addition of the Moon Flakes, the lid was fired to cone 015  (the same cone as each of the other fires) .
